Today discover Jordan’s capital Amman, spreading over 20 hills. First, visit the Citadel with the remains of the Umayyad Palace and the Hercules Temple as well as the Archaeological Museum with its excellent collection. From the Citadel we have a panoramic overview of the traditional part of the city. In downtown, we see the Roman Theatre from the 2nd century and the traditional souks. Then we stroll in Jabal Amman with its 19th-century houses, in one of them the late King Hussein had been born. After that, get an idea of the modernity of the city by driving through Abdoun, a residential area and the centre of nightlife.

After breakfast, we drive 2.5 hours via the Desert Highway to the rock city Petra, Jordan’s main attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Petra was established around the 6th century B.C. by the Nabataean Arabs, a nomadic tribe settling in the area. With a sophisticated water supply and distribution system, the city could prosper and the Nabateans founded a commercial empire that extended into Syria and controlled the main caravan routes at that time. Meet your private guide at the Visitor Centre and start the tour on horseback or on foot to the Siq, the narrow canyon with some votive niches. At the end of this gorge, you will see the most beautiful monument of Petra, the Treasury, also known as Al Khazneh. Continue along the Street of Facades, the Royal Tombs, and Pharaoh’s Castle.

After breakfast, transfer to Allenby Bridge to Cross to Jordan side, Meet & Assist and transfer directly to visit Mt. Nebo where Moses have gone to get a view of the Promised Land before he died and from a platform in front of the church one can enjoy a breathtaking view across the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea.

Then continue to Umm Ar-Rasas which is a very ancient site that is mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. The rectangular walled city is mostly in ruins but does still include several buildings, as well as four churches and some beautiful stone arches.   The main attraction is outside the city walls within the Church of St. Stephen, which contains a very large, perfectly preserved mosaic floor laid down in 718 AD. It portrays fifteen major cities of the Holy Land from both east and west of the River Jordan. This magnificent mosaic is second only to Madaba’s world-famous mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. Then transfer to visit Madaba Mosaic Map which is an index map of the region, dating from the sixth century AD, preserved in the floor of the Greek Orthodox Basilica of Saint George, with two million pieces of color stone, the map depicts hills and valleys, villages and towns in Palestine and the Nile Delta. The mosaic contains the earliest extant representation of Byzantine Jerusalem, labeled the “Holy City.”
